ARTIST STATEMENT
Born with a prominent port-wine stain birthmark on my left cheek, I have a lifelong attraction to the odd, unusual, and other. I work as an artist and curator to create environments and exhibitions that celebrate self-expression and irregularity while removing perceived barriers to the creation and consumption of art.
I work in a wide variety of materials with a particular focus on textiles, printmaking, and glasswork. I encourage engagement from a broad range of viewers through employing levity, humor, and play as tools to capture attention before revealing greater themes. Through bright colors, bold patterns, and dazzling visuals, I explore social issues including queerness, identity, abortion access, mental health, and late stage capitalism.
My most recent installation, STÖR, recontextualized the exhibition and sale of art in a 6,000 square foot labyrinth reminiscent of a Notorious Swedish Retailer. Guests were invited to view and purchase art while being blissfully stimulated with surreal reinterpretations of home goods and decor by myself, my collaborator Lilia Deering, and 35+ other PNW artists. In less than 3 months, STÖR successfully hosted over 10,000 visitors and facilitated the purchase of art by 813 households, resulting in over $50,000 in art sales.
From 2013-2019, I served as the Outreach Director of Second Use Building Materials, channeling a similar desire for accessibility into hands-on workshops, design competitions, project galleries, a Handmade Market series, resource guides, and an easy to search online inventory. I helped fulfill their mission of making salvage accessible, intuitive, and fun, earning Seattle Business Magazine’s Community Impact Award for Social Entrepreneurship in 2015 and Sustainable Seattle’ Sustainability Leadership Award for Resource Management in 2016.
In 2024, I co-founded Wishbone Industrial Arts, a design and fabrication studio that specializes in art objects, lighting, and furnishings. With the support of a fabrication team, I hope to continue to push the boundaries of installation art and facilitate cross community collaboration.
My work has appeared in galleries and museums including AMcE Gallery, J. Rinehart, The Bellevue Art Museum, Museum of Museums, King Street Station, Junior High LA, Get Nice Gallery, and Railspur.
