HOWL
Mary Anne Carter, 2022
Canvas, Serigraph, Polyfil, Monofil, Mixed Media
15’x15’ installation
In the summer of 2022, The Supreme Court overturned Roe V. Wade and HOWL was born in protest. A group exhibition of installations responding to the moment filled the 5th floor of Seattle’s Railspur as an offsite to Seattle Art Fair.
Carter’s collection of Forever Balloons offered audiences a sense of levity and resilience with slogans including “we are free,” “we are doing it anyway” and “we will save us” adorning canvas balloons that also featured abortion pills as a reminder that as a community, we would resist. A backdrop of “Fuck Scotus We’re Doing it Anyway” and free posters were printed in collaboration with Shout Your Abortion.
